NYC shows higher accident stats
If you are riding your scooter in the NYC area, as I am, this may be of particular interest. If you have not taken a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course yet, you should definitely do so. Scooters are wonderfully safe vehicle to operate if you have had the proper training and take the proper precautions.
Motorcyclists in San Antonio; Baton Rouge, La.; and Norfolk, Va., might want to pay a little more attention when blasting down those cities' roads.
They are among the 10 metropolitan areas where motorcycles are most likely to crash, according to a recent survey by the Progressive Group of Insurance Cos. The survey focused on metro areas with populations of 500,000 or more.
No. 1 on the crash list was – no surprise here – New York City, where bikers, Vespa pilots and other gonzo commuter-cyclists have a 71 percent greater chance of an accident than the national average.
Oddly, Dallas, with its traffic chaos and free-form driving, didn't make the top 10. San Antonio (No. 7) and McAllen-Pharr (No. eight) did.
The three least likely areas for a crash: Akron, Ohio; Indianapolis; and Bakersfield, Calif.
"It's important that people understand that no matter where they are, they should be careful," said Rick Stern, motorcycle product manager at Progressive.
