Ride to Work Day - July 19
Mark your calendars - next Wednesday, July 19, is the 15th Annual Ride to Work day for motorcyclists and scooterists. Held every year on the third Wednesday of the month, Annual Ride to Work Day has the mission to "advocate and support the use of motorcycles for transportation and to provide information about transportation riding to the public."
Although its mission only says "motorcycles," its PR materials call it "Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day."
According to its latest press release, "Ride to Work Day helps demonstrate how [motorcycles and scooters] make parking easier and help traffic flow better. Studies have shown that across equal distances commuting motorcyclists reach their destinations in less time than those using automobiles, that motorcycles and scooters consume less resources per mile than automobiles, and that they take up less space on roads. Motorcycle and scooter riders seek improved employer recognition and support for this form of transportation, and more public and government awareness of the positive value of riding."
Even if you already ride your scooter to work regularly, you can take advantage of Ride to Work's handout materials and fact sheets to perhaps inspire coworkers to ride, or your employer to provide incentives like more secure parking for motorcycles and scooters. At the very least, maybe they'll do it for the good press they might get if they are an accomodating employer. While you're at it, maybe you can get more people to sign the Vespatition.
